Monday 22nd January - the most depressing day of the year!

Its official.. today is the most depressing day of the year!

According to psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall, Monday 22 January is the most depressing day of the year taking into account miserable weather, mounting debt, the length of time since Christmas, and failed New Year's resolutions.

So if you are suffering from the January blues...here are some ideas for lifting your spirit and getting the motivation flowing again!

  • Prioritise - Maybe your new year resolutions faded faster than the bubbles in the champagne, but that doesn't have to mean you can't make significant changes in your life right now. As you reflect upon your life currently, what is it that would make the biggest difference for you? If you were to chose one area of your life, that if transformed would have a knock on effect on the rest of your life, what would that be? One way of finding this point of leverage is to break your life down into specific areas (eg career, health, relationships, finances etc) and rate your satisfaction in that area from 1-10 (10 being completely fulfilled). Review the areas that are not working so well. Which one of these limits you most at the moment? Focus on the ways in which you can bring that area into balance. For example, it is difficult to have a successful career without taking care of your health and wellbeing so your area for development may be to commit to eating well or exercising more.
  • Focus on what you do want, rather than what you don't want...According to the principles of the laws of attraction, we will manifest whatever we consistently focus our attention on. So if we are putting our attention on our rising credit card bills or mounting debts, guess what we attract.. more lack of financial resource. Our neurology can't process "nots". For example, if I say to you "don't think of the colour purple".. what do you notice? You will find that the first thing that pops into your mind is the colour purple and you may become even more aware of all the purple in your surroundings. One way of creating more of what you do want is to create a picture of how you would like your life to be. Cut out pictures from magazines and stick them on your fridge or create a collage. Imagine how you will be when all of that is true for you. The best state to manifest from is a place of pure expectation. Trust and believe that it is already on its way, and it will show up a lot faster! • Be Proactive - If there is an area of your life that isn't going as well as you would wish, begin take inspired action to create what it is that you do want. For example, if you are currently single and would like to be in a loving relationship, find ways to get yourself out there and meet new people. You could try online dating agencies such as DatingDirect.com or Match.com. It may seem a little strange to be emailing strangers in cyberspace, but it allows you to connect with other people that you would probably not normally meet.
  • Your next smallest step - If you were to put all the dishes in the sink that you were ever going to wash in your life, you would probably never get started!! Break down big projects into your next smallest step. If a task seems overwhelming, just break it down into the next small action you can take to move you forwards towards that goal. If for example, you would like to clutter-clear your house, start with a cupboard or a drawer and clear that out. The great thing about next smallest step is that it overcomes procrastination and gets the energy flowing again!
  • Find the things that work for you - We are consistently bombarded by information telling us what we should do. Any change that you want to bring about in your life, has to be right for you or you will struggle to maintain your motivation. For example, if you decide that you want to lose some weight, is a calorie counting diet really going to work for you? Find something that fits with your lifestyle. Try increasing your exercise. This could be joining a gym if this appeals to you, or if not, find something that will integrate into your life, committing to taking a daily walk in your lunch break for example.
